Sadikan (77) had lost all hopes to see her son Gulam Farid (41) alive, but luck favored her and finally Farid crossed over to India from Pakistan and reached his home here this morning. After the expiry of his passport, the Pakistani authorities allegedly registered a case against him and put him in Kot Lakhpat Jail.

“I had gone to Pakistan in 2003 to meet my relatives, but the authorities there registered a case against me after the expiry of my passport and refused to listen to me. The court sentenced me to 13 years in jail. But I was released after 16 years that too after the Indian authorities raised the issue with Pakistan,” said Farid.

On getting information about his return, Farid’s relatives reached his house. But Farid could not identify many of them, leading to emotional moments when relatives introduced themselves to him in front of his mother.

“He was away for a long time and we understand his problem. God has fulfilled my last wish. I pray to God for the release of all innocent Indians lodged in Pakistan jails,” said Sadikan.

After the family failed to get any information about him upon the completion of his imprisonment in 2016, they started tracing him. Nearly six months ago, the family approached Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, who through an advocate known to him at Lahore High Court helped trace Farid.

“Aujla through his advocate friend facilitated the release of Farid. The MP had also taken up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs. Though the Pakistani authorities had ordered Farid’s release in August, after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir he was again put in jail,” said former councillor from Malerkotla Beant Kinger.

Kinger said after getting information that Farid was again put in jail, they again approached the Ministry of External Affairs and finally managed his release. “We took his custody last night and reached home today morning,” said Kinger.
