Bathinda, November 24

Dera Sacha Sauda on Sunday held a congregation of its followers at Salabatpura, its biggest centre in the state, as a part of series of eventsto mark the birth anniversary of its founder Shah Mastana. The events are being seen by many as an attempt to “reactivate” the followers in the Malwa region and resume the dera’s social works at full throttle.

Prior to the event, there were speculations that Honeypreet, the adopted daughter of the dera head who recently got bail in dera violence case, may turn up for the programme at Salabatpura, but she didn’t.

Talking to The Tribune, dera’s political wing chief Ram Singh said they were holding “naam charcha” at village and block levels to mark the 128th birth anniversary of their founder and the event at Salabatpura witnessed participation of followers from Bathinda and its neighbouring districts.

He said nothing much should be read into these events, as they kept holding “naam charcha” on a regular basis. Organising committee member Harinder Mangwal said the event was aimed at motivating the followers to carry forward the noble cause of helping the underprivileged sections of society with more vigour.

He said they distributed free ration to 128 poor families on the occasion, while motivating the followers to get involved in various social works like blood donation and building houses for the poor. He said dera followers from Sangrur, Barnala, Bathinda and Moga districts participated in the event in large numbers. An archive video of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was also played during the programme.
