Barnala, October 7

To press for pardon to farmer activist Manjit Dhaner, who has been lodged in the Barnala jail in connection with a murder case, women activists from across the state today joined an indefinite protest that has been going here in front of the jail for the last eight days.

Hailing from different groups, women activists have gathered to support a struggle committee that has been formed to fight for Dhaner.

One of them, Parmjeet Kaur, said, “Dhaner has been named in an FIR without any fault as he fought for justice for one Kiranjit Kaur of Mehal Kalan, who was raped and murdered by influential persons in 1997. Women from across the state have come here to express solidarity with Dhaner.”

Flanked by thousands of residents on September 30, Dhaner had surrendered before a Barnala court as he had been directed by the apex court in the first week of September to do so within four weeks.

Another protester, Manpreet Kaur, said, “Dhaner has been fighting for the rights of labourers, youngsters and women for years. He has been troubling mighty so he has been framed.”

“The number of protesters has been increasing every day. Our protest will continue till Dhaner is released,” said Buta Singh Burjgill, convener of the struggle committee.
