Amritsar, September 13

The Punjab Police have nabbed a man and confiscated around 7.5 kg of heroin from his possession in Poonga village located near Indo-Pak border here on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Shamsher Singh, alias Shera, of Bhaini village. The police also claimed to have seized Rs 28 lakh cash, four mobile phones and an SUV from his custody.

Complimenting the rural police, SPS Parmar, IG, Border Range, termed it a major catch in the recent past. He said Shera works as courier and was found to be having cross-border links with Pakistan-based smugglers and anti-national elements. A few names of his accomplices have cropped up during the preliminary probe. Shera was in contact with Pakistani smugglers through mobile phones, social media and over-the-top applications. The IG said the drug consignment was pushed through from the border fence by Pakistani smugglers near Bharobhal village.

SSP Amritsar (Rural) Vikram Jeet Duggal said Shera was arrested for the first time. “Though he did not have any previous record, the fact that Rs 28 lakh of drug money was seized from him indicates that he had smuggled narcotics earlier too,” the SSP said, adding that the forward and backward links of Shera was being ascertained. More arrests are likely to be made soon, he added.
