Faridkot, August 7

The Sessions Court on Wednesday started hearing in the attempt to murder case against former Akali Dal MLA Mantar Singh Brar, Inspector General of Police Paramraj Singh Umranangal, former Moga SSP Charanjit Singh Sharma, SP-rank officers Paramjit Singh Pannu and Baljit Singh and the then Kotkapura city SHO Gurdeep Singh Pandher.

Four days after the court of Judicial Magistrate, Ist Class (JMIC), Faridkot, Ekta Uppal committed the case to the Sessions Court, the latter on Wednesday adjourned the matter to August 23 for framing of the charges against the accused.

All six accused were present before the court during the hearing of the case today.

Since June 27 when the SIT had filed the chargesheet against the accused police officers and the former Akali MLA, the case was pending in the court of JMIC as the accused were giving one application after another, raising objections on the chargesheet.

As the attempt to murder case is exclusively to be tried by the Sessions Court, these applications were delaying the committing of the case by the JMIC to the Sessions Court. However, dismissing a dossier of these applications on August 3, the JMIC finally committed the case to the Sessions Court.

Sacrilege, police firing cases

  • The SIT probing the sacrilege and police firing cases had filed the chargesheet against the accused police officers and former Akali MLA Mantar Singh Brar on June 27
  • Since then, the case was pending in the court of JMIC as the accused were filing one petition or the other to delay the trial
