Sacrilege issue and the recent closure report filed by the CBI were once again discussed in the House today.

During the zero hour, just when Leader of Opposition, Harpal Singh Cheema was making his point about the land sharks operating in the state, his colleague Aman Arora sought to know why Chief Minister, DGP Prabodh Kumar and Advocate General Atul Nanda were on different pages with regards to the CBI closure report. Responding to his charge, Capt Amarinder held the Akalis responsible for scuttling the investigation into the Bargari sacrilege case and the failure to bring the culprits to book.

Despite the Akalis’ efforts to obstruct justice, his government would, however, take the case to its logical conclusion and ensure justice for the victims, Capt Amarinder said during the zero hour, while responding to the issue raised by AAP legislator Aman Arora. They (Akalis) had handed over the case to the CBI to delay the investigations and pressured it to submit the closure report, he alleged. No proper inquiry was held by the CBI, he said, adding that the Central agency deliberately did not make any headway in the case under the directives of the then Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal.

The SAD and BJP legislative parties today submitted a privilege motion to Speaker Rana KP Singh against Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh for allegedly misleading the Vidhan Sabha and asserted that conflicting statements were being made on the sensitive issue of sacrilege to derail investigations.

Speaker Rana KP Singh told The Tribune that he had asked his staff to study the privilege motion and it would be processed as per the rules.

The SAD-BJP legislative wings, led by SAD legislative party leader Parminder Singh Dhindsa and including BJP legislators, also claimed to have submitted evidence to prove that the Chief Minister had misled the Assembly.

Giving details of the privilege motion, Parminder Singh Dhindsa and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia said in a press conference that on one hand the Chief Minister through a resolution passed in the Assembly last year withdrew sacrilege probe from the CBI, but on the other, the Punjab Police special DGP has in a recent letter urged the CBI to continue the probe.

They alleged that the CM had misled the Assembly by citing a court dated July 25, 2019, selectively and made out a case that the erstwhile SAD-BJP government should not have forwarded the case for investigation into sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib to the CBI.

The leaders said in fact, the Chief Minister had contradicted his own statement of July 31 in which he had called for reinvestigation of sacrilege cases by the CBI. They said even earlier on November 6, 2015, Capt Amarinder had stated that the cases of sacrilege incidents be probed by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court. The leaders said on this occasion Capt Amarinder Singh was accompanied by then Congress president Rahul Gandhi and PCC president Partap Bajwa who had both demanded a CBI inquiry into the sacrilege cases.
