A pal of gloom descended on the premises of Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana, after three students, hailing from Bihar, died when the motorcycle they were riding met with an accident last night.

The motorcycle ( DL 65 AS 1875), they were riding, collided with a wall after hitting an electric pole near a curve at Sarinh village in Ludhana district on the Malerkotla road near here.

The deceased have been identified as Shankar Yadav of Malaria Meet Tola district, Saharsa (Bihar), Anshuman Kumar Singh (21) and Vipul Pandey (20) of Rajpur district, Kaimoor. While Anshuman and Vipul were students of mechanical engineering (semester V), Shankar was pursuing computer science (semester V). All of them hailed from middle class agrarian families of Bihar and their parents had high hopes from them.

Though the exact cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained circumstantial evidence suggested that the motorcycle had skidded after the driver failed to negotiate a turn on the highway and collided with a wall on the left side. None of the deceased was wearing helmet.

Confirming that the college authorities had informed parents of the deceased about the incident, investigating officer at the Dehlon police Ranjit Singh said the process for inquest proceeding under Section 174 of CrPC had been initiated on the statement of Bablu Singh, maternal uncle of Anshuman. “The bodies of the deceased will be handed over to next of kin after getting post-mortem conducted according to law,” said Ranjit Singh.
