Sangrur, July 7

Heaps of garbage has piled up in Sangrur City as the Nagar Council (NC) has no land to dump waste. Today, a local court restrained the Sangrur NC from using the land it had leased to dump waste as affected residents filed a petition.

Earlier, the Sangrur NC had taken land in Badrukhan village to dump waste till June 30, 2019. After expiry of the contract, the NC officials signed a fresh agreement at an annual lease of Rs 1.50 lakh for one acre with another farmer from Badrukhan to dump waste. On Wednesday, when the authorities concerned started dumping waste, people residing nearby raised objections.

“We have paid all the charges and purchased plots to construct houses. The NC has no right to construct dump yard at backside of our plots. The dump site has no access from fields or through our colony. However, the NC officers tried to pass their waste loaded trailer through our plots. We will not allow it at any cost,” said Advocate Sameer Fatta.

“The court of Prashant Verma, Civil Judge Sr Division Sangrur has stayed the dumping of waste till July 26. All plot owners have decided to pursue the case further,” said Fatta.

The stay has created serious problems for the Sangrur NC as its officers have been left with no space to dump waste.

“We have been asking the NC since November 2018 to find a suitable land. However, they did not care and finalised the land without verifying facts. At present, we have no land to dump waste. We will discuss the matter with Cabinet Minister Vijay Inder Singla on Saturday,” said Mahesh Kumar Meshi, Congress councillor and former Sangrur NC president. Efforts to contact the Shiromani Akali Dal supported Sangrur NC president Ripudaman Dhillon proved futile.
