Fazilka, July 11

The activists of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Reta Mazdoor Union held a meeting at Jalalabad today to protest illegal sand mining in Fazilka district and alleged police inaction in some of the criminal cases registered earlier.

Hans Raj Golden, secretary, CPI district unit, while addressing the meeting alleged that illegal sand mining was rampant in Fazilka in connivance with police officials.

He alleged that contractors had been digging the quarries much deeper beyond the stipulated 10 ft causing heavy financial losses to government exchequer. Despite repeated request, no action had been taken against the contractors, he claimed.

He said the JCB machine of Karnail Singh of Sukhera Bodla village was allegedly snatched at gunpoint on June 13, but no action had been taken by the police.

The activists threatened to block the overbridge at the Fazilka-Ferozepur road on July 16 if their demands were not met.
