The lone woman gynaecologist in the district, currently posted at the Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital, has proceeded on protest leave alleging maltreatment, harassment and mental torture by relatives of a patient accompanied by certain mediapersons and politicians, leaving the patients in lurch.

In a letter to the Senior Medical Officer (SMO), Dr Amanpreet Kaur said on July 5 when she was attending patients in the OPD certain people started misbehaving with her. “I am not in a position to attend patients as there is threat to my life,” she added.

The SMO wrote to the SSP alleging that the relatives of a patient accompanied by certain cameramen and politicians entered the room of the doctor and misbehaved with her over referring of the patient to other hospital. “There is fear among the medical fraternity and they apprehend threat to their lives, so take necessary action against the mentioned persons,” the SMO added.

Earlier also three gynaecologists Dr Jaspreet Kaur, Dr Rupinder and Dr Vidhi Kaur had resigned from their posts alleging same reason.

Dr Satnam Banga, President of the Doctors’ Association, said, “It is unfortunate as the doctor was not at fault. She had referred a pregnant woman, whose case was complicated, for delivery to the civil hospital in Chandigarh.” He said relatives called certain mediapersons and politicians from opposition parties and started raising slogans.

Dr NK Aggarwal, Civil Surgeon, confirmed that the hospital authorities have written to the SSP to take action and said he had taken up the matter with the Deputy Commissioner and demanded a police post in the hospital.

Sources say there is an acute shortage of staff and the working conditions are not congenial to doctors and they have to put in extra hours to cope with patients’ rush. Out of sanctioned 30 posts of lab technicians, 15 are lying vacant.
