Jaishankar directs embassy to help 7 stranded youths

Union Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said on Thursday that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had directed the Indian embassy in Iraq to take immediate steps to ensure the quick return of seven Punjabi youths stranded in Irbil city for the past seven months.

Harsimrat, along with family members of the seven youths belonging to Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts, met the External Affairs Minister on Thursday. She said the country’s Consul General in Iraq Chandramouli K Kern briefed the minister about the steps taken by the consulate to ensure the well-being of the youths. The Consul General said the embassy staff were in touch with the youths and were extending all help to them, including financial assistance.

Asserting that more aid would be provided as and when required, Kern said since the youth had filed a cheating complaint, a legal case had been initiated.

During the meeting, Jaishankar said the Indian consulate would take all steps to complete legal formalities needed to ensure the return of the youths.

Rs 57-lakh GST refund on langar items 

Union Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Thursday said the NDA government had fulfilled the promise made to the Sikh community by refunding Rs 57-lakh GST charged on raw materials used to prepare langar in gurdwaras, including the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
