Crammed in trains and buses for over 24 hours withthe temperature hovering around 43°C, daily earners are travelling home to Bihar to vote in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Punjab is witnessing a mass exodus, albeit of a temporary kind.

A sizeable portion of its migrant population is heading ‘home’ to vote. Both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are voting in all seven phases of the ongoing polls that began April 11 with the Purvanchal region voting on May 19.

“My return ticket through a train from Delhi and back to Ludhiana has been booked. It is a welcome break and I can stay home for a few days, do some political activities and then return to work,” says Gaya Ram, a dailyearner from Bihar, who works in a hosiery unit. “Itis peak hosiery manufacturing time but back home, being a part of the political system is important.”
