In a first, four gaushalas in two districts of the state have decided to use paddy straw as fodder for cattle to help farmers get rid of stubble without burning. After a state-level meeting here, members of various gaushalas have announced to opt for the move.

“Today, four gaushalas in Sangrur, Ahmedgarh, Dhuri and Barnala have decided to use paddy straw as fodder for cattle as it also contains the required nutrients. Before the paddy harvesting begins, we will conduct more meetings across the state to convince all 470 gaushalas to follow suit and help the authorities contain stubble burning,” said Ramesh Gupta, president, Punjab Gaushala Mahasangh.

To convince farmers and the gaushala management committees to utilise paddy straw as fodder, the Scientific Awareness and Social Welfare Forum and Mathura-based Swami Amrita Nand, who has been visiting various states to convince the residents against stubble burning, along with other NGOs organised a seminar at a local gaushala on Sunday.

“In Mathura, a majority of farmers are using paddy straw as cattle feed then why can’t it be done in Punjab. The state should not waste crores on advertisements to spread awareness against stubble burning but it must utilise the same in making arrangements to shift paddy straw from fields for its use as cattle feed,” said Amrita Nand.

AS Mann from the social welfare forum said more seminars would be organised across the state and a detailed list of the interested farmers would be prepared to take up their cases with the Agriculture Department for the release of subsidy at the earliest to purchase required machines.

Meanwhile, officials of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kheri, gave a detailed presentation on stubble burning and got a positive response. A discussion was also held on the possibilities of utilising paddy straw as fodder. “Paddy straw can be used as fodder and it should be promoted to prevent stubble burning,” said Mandeep Singh, associate director, KVK, Kheri.
