Sangrur, April 6

The division among Punjab Congress leaders on caste lines has increased after today’s announcement of three more candidates for the LS elections.

Leaders belonging to the Mazhabi Sikh and Balmiki communities have accused the Congress of ignoring them and taking care of only the Ramdasia community.

“There are four reserved seats in Punjab — Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Fatehgarh Sahib and Faridkot. But, the state Congress has not given even a single seat to members of the Mazhabi Sikh and Balmiki communities despite the fact that out of the total 32 per cent scheduled caste population of the state, 20 per cent population is from these communities,” said Poonam Kangra, who had applied for party ticket from Fatehgarh Sahib constituency. She is state general secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress and Women Congress. “Around 40 candidates from both the Mazhabi Sikhs and Balmiki communities had applied for all four seats, but the Congress has not found even a single eligible candidate. If the party really wants the welfare of our community, we are ready to contest from general seats too,” she said.

She presided over a meeting of her community at her Sangrur residence and decided to take up the matter with party president Rahul Gandhi and other leaders.
