The actual construction of the four-lane 4.25-km stretch of road leading from the town to the International Border (IB) commenced today with the private contractor and NHAI officials performing “bhoomi pujan”.

Officials said the estimated cost of construction of the 60-m-wide road, which would include a service lane, was pegged at Rs 90-100 crore.

The Kartapur corridor is divided into two projects. One is the road and the other is the Integrated Check Post (ICP).

The ICP is being established near the raised pedestal on which the BSF has installed binoculars.

The construction of the ICP started last month.

“I wanted to be present on the auspicious occasion but I had some prior commitments. With the start of work on the road and the ICP, being built on 50 acres, the Kartarpur corridor has now become a reality. NHAI officials have informed me that the corridor will see the light of the day by the last week of October or the first week of November when the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak are scheduled to commence,” said Cabinet minister and Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.

The road construction work is being undertaken by Ceigall India Limited, a Ludhiana-based company.

The firm’s vice-president, Jatinder Singh, said his company had been contracted by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.

Officials of the company and NHAI were present when the “bhoomi pujan” was performed in the morning.
