Amritsar, April 7

In a latest development, the Centre is planning to construct an open ‘galliara’ at the Jallianwala Bagh that could share the boundary of the Golden Temple complex.

Rajya Sabha MP Shwait Malik, also a member of the Jallianwala Bagh National Memorial Trust, said the project would be taken up in the second phase of its renovation.

The first phase worth Rs 19.36 crore will be finalised on April 10. “For the second phase, we intend to acquire the residential and commercial units located between the main entrance of the Jallianwala Bagh and the Golden Temple by adequately compensating the owners. The plan is to construct an open leisure place in the form of a ‘galliara’ just on the lines of one that existed around the Golden Temple,” Malik said.

The history of Jallianwala Bagh speaks that it was never a proper bagh or garden but a large rectangular ground of almost bare earth with unkempt grassy area and isolated trees. The residents used to assemble or take a stroll while the children used to play there. It is said that the land was privately owned by several persons but after the massacre, the Indian National Congress procured it for about Rs 5 lakh.
