Accused of theft, youth dies in custody

A 22-year-old youth arrested in a vehicle theft case died in the police custody at the Janakpuri post on Sunday.

Initially, the family of the youth suspected foul play and refused to get the post-mortem done. However, later they agreed following which the autopsy was done and viscera had been sent for examination. A magisterial inquiry has also been started.

The deceased has been identified as Karan of Prem colony, Bhamia Khurd. He and his friend Gautam of Moti Nagar was nabbed by the Janakpuri police at a naka on Saturday evening. A stolen motorcycle was also recovered from them.

As per the police, after the arrest and the registration of the case by the Janakpuri police, both the accused were lodged in the lock-up. After having dinner, the duo slept. It was around 4.30 am, when Gautam noticed blood coming out from the mouth of Karan following which he raised alarm. The police then rushed the victim to the Civil Hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Police sources said Karan had a notorious past as he was already facing a snatching case registered against him at the Model Town police station and now he was running absent from the court and the proceedings to declare him a proclaimed offender were already on.

When contacted, ADCP-1 Gurpreet Singh Sikand said Karan was nabbed in a vehicle theft case and further proceedings would be done after the judicial inquiry only.

Probe ordered 

  • A magisterial probe has been initiated following the death of Karan in police custody
  • The deceased’s  kin had accused the cops of torturing him but sources say they later backtracked from their charge
