Sangrur, March 16

Having fought a legal battle for 11 years, 60 farmers of nine villages will finally get the payment for their land, which was acquired by the state drainage department.

The authorities today submitted an undertaking in a local court to release Rs 117.90 crore by April 30. The department had acquired 592 acres for widening the seasonal rivulet, Ghaggar, in 2006.

Lalit Garg, counsel for farmers, said, “Superintendent Engineer Devinder Singh gave an undertaking in the court that they would release the money in two weeks, but if they face any glitch, the amount would be released by April 30.”

The court had, last week, ordered the attachment and sale of official residence of the Sangrur DC, Government Ranbir College building, Ranbir Club, Red Cross Bhawan, bus stand, patwarkhana and the office of SDM, Moonak, to recover farmers’ dues.

“There are a total of 110 farmers. Of them, 60 would be paid, while the remaining would get their money after filing petitions in the court,” said Garg.

In 2006, the government had acquired 592 acres at Andana, Navagaon, Hotipur, Baupur, Chandu, Mandvi, Khanauri Khurd, Shahpur Theh and Banarasi villages at Rs 4.60 lakh per acre. Dissatisfied with monetary compensation, the farmers had approached Sangrur court in 2008. After losing the case, they filed 110 petitions in Punjab and Haryana High Court for enhanced compensation. On July 21, 2017, the HC directed the Sangrur court to look into the matter. On December 20, 2017, the Sangrur court directed the DC to pay the farmers at the rate of Rs 39.50 lakh per acre by January 31, 2018.
