Sangrur, December 3

Scottish Novelist Vee Walker, who had written the novel Major Tom’s War, says she has come to Punjab to thank the third generation of soldiers Amar Singh and Arjan Singh, who were her grandfather Tom’s friends during the World War l (WW-l).

She left Sangrur on Monday evening after attending a heritage festival on Sunday and participating in a special session with girl students of the Akal Degree College on Monday.

“I am excited about meeting descendants of soldiers Amar Singh and Arjan Singh, who were friends of my grandfather,” she said.

She said Amar Singh was the Risaldar Major who was also instrumental in bringing Guru Granth Sahib to France. About Arjan Singh, she said he was a young officer at that time, who was her grandfather’s assistant and saved his life, as did Risaldar Harnam Singh, the third great Sikh whose life is covered in her novel.

“On December 7, I will present the Medal of Honour of the town of Doullens to Amar Singh’s granddaughter. I will meet Arjan Singh’s family on Wednesday.” She said. Sangrur Heritage Preservation Society chairman Karanvir Singh Sibia said, “We got vital information from Walker on preservation of heritage sites in Sangrur.”
