Groundwater authority on Cabinet agenda

Groundwater authority on Cabinet agenda

Chandigarh, December 3

A year after withdrawing legislation to regulate groundwater in the wake of opposition from ministers representing urban areas, the state government is coming with a revised draft of the proposed regulatory authority in its Cabinet meeting scheduled tomorrow.

“The government is serious on bringing the regulatory body. It is the need of the hour,” said a senior government functionary.

In a major change from the previous draft of empowering the proposed regulatory to fix and revise water tariff charges in urban areas, now it has been proposed that the Local Government Department would retain the power of fixing water tariff of consumers in municipal areas.

However, the proposed authority would be empowered to fix water tariff in industrial and commercial areas. It is learnt that the farming community is out of the ambit of the proposed regulatory body despite the agriculture sector being responsible for 90 per cent of the water consumption.

Once the authority is set up, all users will have to pay for water based on a scientific calculation rather than flat charges. Before tabling the report, the draft has been discussed with Cabinet sub-committee. — TNS

In a major development, the Punjab Government has decided to release the sanctioned amount of capital subsidy to the general industrial units and export-oriented units held earlier due to non-fulfillment of required conditions under provisions of the industrial policy.

Disclosing this here today, a spokesperson of the Punjab Government said a notification had already been issued in this regard, after approval from the Cabinet.

The notification has also been published in the official gazette of the Punjab Government as well as uploaded on the website of the Industries Department. — TNS
