Chandigarh, December 3

Government’s decision to give panchayat lands for industrial development is going to face a strong resistance from workers and farmers’ organisation.

The state Cabinet on Monday gave in-principle approval to amend the Punjab Village Common Land (Regulation) Rules, 1964, to create land banks in rural areas to boost industrial development in the state.

However, several rural workers’ organisations have claimed that the government was doing nothing but “facilitating land grabbing” and have announced to oppose the move.

Zameen Prapti Sangharsh Committee which works among Dalits and have led their struggle for right to till panchyat lands in a large number of villages in Sangrur has already announced to oppose the move. “Ministers in the government are conniving with big industrial houses to hand over assets of rural people to the rich corporate. To protect the right to till the panchyat lands of the poorest of the poor, we have led struggle for many years. We won’t let this happen,” said Gurmakh Singh Sekha, secretary of the committee.

In a press release, Zora Singh Nasrali and Lachchman Singh Sevewala of the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union said they had been demanding 10 marla for the rural poor and space for dumping grounds for decades, but the government had not paid any heed to their demands.

Calling it a conspiracy, the union alleged that the Congress had once again proved that it works only for the wellbeing of the rich. They demanded that the government must stop any such move with immediate effect.
