Sangrur, December 1

Under the banner of Sangrur Heritage Preservation Society (SHPS), locals organised a heritage walk with Vee Walker, a novelist and heritage consultant from the United Kingdom, to promote the heritage sites of Sangrur. The society also celebrated the fifth edition of its festival “VIRSA” at Akal Degree College for Women.

“You have great heritage sites and these must be preserved and promoted to attract tourists from across the globe,” said Walker at the Sangrur college after the heritage walk.

Chairman of SHPS Karanvir Singh Sibia said December 1 had been dedicated for the promotion of tourism for Sangrur district, which was “neglected” by the state government.

“We have a large number of prominent historic sites, which are lying in neglect. The state government could earn a lot by promoting these buildings for tourism. We have prepared some documentaries also to promote such sites across the country,” said Sibia.

These heritage sites are at Malerkotla, Bagrian, Khetra Kheri, Sunam and Badrukhan.

During the festival, books like “The Sikh Heritage: Beyond the Borders”, “A Tryst with Royalty”, “Delhi Heritage: Top 10 Baolis” and “Continents Connect Poetry of Wings” were also released.

“I have been trying to arrange funds for the repair of heritage sites of Sangrur,” said Vijay Inder Singla, Sangrur MLA and PWD Minister.
