Farmers’ protest hits rail traffic

Ferozepur, December 3

Farmers blocked rail tracks and brought the train service to a complete halt. Under the banner of the Kisan Sangharsh Committee, the protesting farmers sat on the tracks affecting movement of 11 trains.

Farmers resorted to blockage of trains in support of their demands which include payment of sugarcane dues and financial assistance for managing stubbles. Their indefinite “Rail roko rally” has resulted into short termination, diversion and complete cancellation of various trains.

The protesters raised anti-government slogans. Addressing the gathering, Inderjit Singh, district president of the committee, said Rs 77 crore sugarcane dues should be released to the farmers at the earliest. “The dilly-dallying approach of the government in payment of the dues has forced us to resort to such tactics,” he said.

Saab Singh, secretary of the committee, said the conditions laid down for the payment of paddy stubbles should be eased and the compensation amount of Rs 2,500 per acre for managing the residue should be raised to Rs 6,000 for the farmers. He claimed that the government was backtracking from its promise to allot residential plots for the labour community. Till the filing of the story, the farmers had not lifted their protest.
