State to institute Guru Nanak award

Chandigarh, November 1

The Punjab Cabinet today decided to institute ‘Sri Guru Nanak Dev Award for Promotion of Peace and Interfaith Understanding’ in commemoration of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. The coveted award will carry a citation and cash prize of Rs 11 lakh and will be adjudicated by a jury to be notified by the state government.

The Cabinet also approved the modalities for the special session of the 15th Punjab Vidhan Sabha, to be presided over by Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu on November 6, to commemorate the celebrations.

The special session is being convened to propagate the ideology and teachings of the first Sikh Guru in a befitting manner, said CM Capt Amarinder Singh. The Cabinet discussed at length the preparedness of the special session, to be held from 11 am to 1 pm on November 6, and to be also attended by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. It was also decided to extend an invite to all members of the Haryana Legislative Assembly for the historic ninth session of the 15th Assembly. — TNS
