Faridkot, November 4

About 600 students from Classes 1 to VIII along with their parents staged a protest against the closure of their school by the department.

These students of Government Adarsh School, Malla village of Faridkot, sat on a dharna on the Bathinda-Amritsar road for about two hours.

They urged the state government not to close their school, at least in the mid of academic session. They submitted a memorandum of their demands to Tehsildar, Jaito, who has reached the spot.

The students, their parents along with teaching staff are protesting since October 23 when the School Education Department had issued orders to close the school, end the services of all teachers and shift the students to other government schools in the area.

For the closure orders of this English medium, CBSE-pattern school in the mid of academic session, students are upset.

As all government schools in the area are Punjabi medium and affiliated with the Punjab School Education Board, changing the study pattern and medium of instructions for these students in the mid of academic session is a cruel joke, said Gurpreet Singh, father of a student, while participating in the protest on Monday.

In its order dated October 23, the Director General School Education (DGSE) had ordered the closure of the school. As no society has properly run the school in the last 8 years, so it be closed, reads the DGSE’s letter.

Kumar Saurav Raj, DC, Faridkot, said he was trying to solve the issue and raised it time and again with the state government.
