Sultanpur Lodhi, November 5

Had it not been the Sant Samaj and their dedicated workforce of hundreds of volunteers, it would have been extremely difficult for the state government and the administration to manage such a huge gathering during the ongoing 550th Gurpurb celebrations here.

With a huge white turban tied on his head, Baba Kashmir Singh Bhooriwale can be spotted supervising the langar arrangements on 8 acres near Gurdwara Ber Sahib.

The 53-year-old baba, who has a B Pharmacy degree, is also engaged in massive kar sewa at 25 gurdwaras being run by the SGPC. “Ahead of the Gurpurb, we have also set up a 100-room sarai at Gurdwara Hatt Sahib, where the sangat has already started staying. We have made triple-storey tents out of shuttering material for our volunteers within the langar premises for them to rest. Our teams will be stationed here till November 15 to render sewa and will move back to the headquarters in Amritsar thereafter.”

Here from Hazoor Sahib, Sant Narinder Singh is popular for his pizza-burger langar. The 50 year-plus baba says, “I was a youngster when I became sewadar of Baba Nidhan Singh and joined his dera. Some people criticise me for not having simple langar but I have always felt that the birth anniversary of the Gurus should be celebrated like any other gala birthday party. Some underprivileged kids who have never had a chance to enjoy such luxury food are so elated.”

Sant Jagtar Singh too has set up a plush 100-room Bebe Nanki sarai and a parking lot adjoining to Gurdwara Ber Sahib, which remains completely occupied all the time.

Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal’s contribution in sprucing up the sacred Bein, developing its ghats, beautifying entry points of the town, plantation of trees and spreading environment awareness through the ongoing events have not gone unnoticed. He is currently engaged in setting up a museum and study centre on Guru Nanak in the town.
