Para-shuttler protests denial of job

Para-shuttler protests denial of job

Abohar, November 29

Denied a government job, Punjab’s only international wheelchair para-shuttler Sanjeev Kumar (33) is planning a protest outside Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s house on December 3 in Chandigarh. His family and some other special category sportspersons will be there to express solidarity with him, he claimed.

The country’s hero on many occasions is still without a regular job. “The state government promised me a job in the past but now, it seems to have turned a blind eye to para-athletes. I am the state’s only international para-badminton player. Earning ranking points is tough,” he said.

Sanjeev belongs to Telupura village in Abohar. His father Varinder Kumar had retired on superannuation of service from Government Senior Secondary School in Khuyiansarwer as a Class IV employee two years ago and funded his participation in international competitions by spending his gratuity.

Sanjeev said he had won 20 gold, six silver and three bronze medals in national championships and five gold, six silver and seven bronze medals in international meets.

Sanjeev had met the CM on January 17 this year and requested for a job in the quota for physically challenged persons. The CM had directed the Social Security and Sports Department to do the needful at the earliest. He again met the CM at a function. “But no efforts were made by officials to arrange a job for me. If a cricketer can be posted as a Deputy Superintendent of Police, why the only international para-shuttler can’t be given suitable job?” he asked.
