One killed in brawl over land dispute

A 55-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death while four others injured in a brawl over land dispute at Simbal Jhallian village here today. The deceased has been identified as Harbans Singh. His son Gurpinder Singh and nephew Taranjit Singh also suffered injuries in the incident.

Gurpinder Singh in the police complaint alleged that his neighbour Bhupinder Singh used to keep his cattle at their land adjoining their home in the village. Today morning, Bhupinder along with his father Harnek Singh, wife Jatinder Kaur and son Gurpreet Singh attacked his father Harbans Singh with sharp-edged weapons when he was about to start construction on the said plot, he alleged. When he and Taranjit Singh rushed to the spot to save his father they were also attacked, he alleged.

All three were taken to the Ropar Civil Hospital from where Harbans Singh was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Bhupinder Singh who along with his wife also got injured in the incident said when Harbans Singh was to unload sand at the site for construction, his wife suggested him to cover the drain in the plot so that it didn’t choke with sand. Enraged over it, Harbans Singh and his relatives thrashed her, he alleged. He further alleged that when he and his father and son returned home after visiting a religious place, they were also attacked by Gurpinder Singh.

SHO Des Raj said a case under Section 302, 323 and 34 of the IPC had been registered against Bhupinder Singh, Harnek Singh, Gurpreet Singh and Jatinder Kaur.
