Nagar panchayat to be challaned

Nagar panchayat to be challaned

Tribune News Service

Sangrur, November 5

After The Tribune highlighted burning of stubble on nagar panchayat land adjacent to a tehsil complex two days back in Dirba, the police have finally registered a case against a tenant farmer while the civil administration has decided to issue a challan to the nagar panchayat authorities.

Interestingly, Dirba tehsildar Rajpal Singh Sekhon on Monday had stated that the challan was issued to tenant Chamkaur Singh, but Dirba SDM Manjeet Singh today said, “As per instructions of the government, we have filed an FIR against Chamkaur Singh and decided to issue a challan to the nagar panchayat authorities, who are owners of the land. The stubble fire could have caused damage to our complex where records of 34 villages are kept,” the SDM said.

As per official records of Sangrur district, on Tuesday, the police registered 24 FIRs under Section 188 of the IPC against persons involved in stubble burning in various villages. They have organised 22 flag marches till date and deputed 60 special police patrolling parties to prevent burning of stubble. Apart from it, the administration has also deputed 14 joint teams of officials of various departments.

“Till date, we have imposed a fine of Rs 13.25 lakh on various persons involved in 517 incidents of stubble burning in the district. We have also made red entries in the land records of 396 persons, who were found involved in the burning of stubble,” said Ghanshyam Thori, Deputy Commissioner, Sangrur.
