Kin of PoWs seek Modi, Imran help

Kin of PoWs seek Modi, Imran help

Sangrur, November 5

On the occasion of 550th Gurpurb, families of 13 prisoners of the 1962, ’65 and ’71 wars (PoWs) from Punjab have written letters to PM Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan, through the Ministry of External Affairs, for their release from the neighbouring country’s jails.

“The 550th Gurpurb is a big opportunity for the Indian Government to raise the issue of the release of the PoWs, who have been languishing in various jails of Pakistan after different wars. We are hopeful that our request will be heard this time,” said Maha Singh from Karmgarh village of Barnala district.

Maha’s father Sepoy Lal Singh went missing after the 1965 war and he was born in March 1966. Initially, the family thought that Lal Singh died in the war but in August 2013, Ferozepur resident Satish Kumar, who was jailed in Pakistan for 12 years, told them he was lodged in the Kila Attack frontier Jail there.

“My uncle Sepoy Baghel Singh had gone missing from near the China border during the 1965 war and Satish confirmed that he too was in a Pakistani jail. We hope that the 550th Gurpurb will bring my uncle back,” said Amrik Singh, sarpanch of Dalel Singh Wala village of Mansa.

Amrik said after getting information from Satish, he along with the kin of some other PoWs visited many offices of the state and Centre. But when they failed to get any help, they filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the next date of hearing is November 24. —TNS
