The Vidhan Sabha resolution appealing to Akal Takht and the SGPC to initiate a move to break the age-old tradition of not allowing woman ragis to perform kirtan at the Golden Temple has raised the voice against gender discrimination, but on wrong podium, said religious experts.

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh viewed that the issue pertains to “rehat maryada” of Darbar Sahib and needs to be deliberated in the light of Gurmat norms. “It could not be answered or judged instantly in a one-liner. I have received no communication from the government about what was discussed in the Vidhan Sabha. As and when it is received, the issue would be taken up,” he said.

Historically speaking, the Sikh “maryada” do not allow women to perform kirtan inside the Darbar Sahib, and it was believed that its “maryada” was different from other Sikh holy places. The demand was raised earlier too.

SGPC chief secretary Dr Roop Singh said, “This subject should not have been raised on a political podium. The Golden Temple’s maryada is different from other holy shrines.”

SGPC member Kiranjot Kaur said there should be no gender discrimination when it comes to performing kirtan at the Golden Temple as Guru Nanak had visualised a society in which there could be no place for discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, social status or gender.
