New Delhi, November 3

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Sunday made a salutary reference to the “courageous” role of women of the Sikh community and cited the incident of Muktsar battle between the army of Guru Gobind Singh and that of Aurangzeb.

This was at a function after he released a book of selected poems of poetess and spiritualist late Baljeet Kaur Tulsi, mother of Rajya Sabha member and Congress leader KTS Tulsi. The book is written in Punjabi and contains about 70 poems. Former Chief Justice of India Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar (retd) was the guest of honour.

Dr Manmohan Singh eulogised the Sikh women in the context of the life and writings of the author, who represented the liberal and feminist voice of her time.

She was born in 1915 and passed away in 1995. She was associated with freedom fighters and luminaries of freedom struggle later, including Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and Sarojini Naidu.

In the Battle of Muktsar, 40 Sikh women disowned their husbands for having abjectly abdicated the war after rebelling and turning their backs on Guru Gobind Singh. They taunted their husbands asking them to wear their bangles, as they would be joining the Guru’s army in the battle.

Finding themselves humiliated, the men returned to the battlefield and all of them made the supreme sacrifice while fighting the Mughals. The Guru officially pardoned them posthumously.

Heaping high praise on the poetess, Dr Singh said: “She championed the cause of suppressed voices of women of the patriarchal society of her era,” and added that her views were inspired by Gurbani and laced with preachings of the Gurus. Veteran journalist and former Rajya Sabha MP HK Dua also spoke in similar vein.
