Keeping in mind the need to keep the cops hale and healthy, the Police Lines has got a new gymnasium exclusively for the use of policemen. Ferozepur MLA Parminder Singh Pinki has managed a grant of Rs 25 lakh for the purpose.

While talking to The Tribune, Vivek Sheel Soni, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), said the new gym had been set up in the Police Lines so that cops could utilise it to curb obesity and other diseases. “More facilities like steam and sauna bath will be soon added to ensure cops get full health package under one roof,” he said.

A policeman said he always felt the need to do something for his health as the extra working hours always left him exhausted and no time for exercise. “Now with gym provided by the department, many of us will be able to keep ourselves fit and healthy,” he added.

Last week, Pinki handed over the cheque of additional Rs 5 lakh to B Chandrashekhar, IG (Ferozepur Range), for procurement of more equipment. Pinki said, “I hope the new gym decked with steam and sauna bath will serve a long way to keep the cops stress-free”.

Hailing the idea of the city police to have a gym, local surgeon Dr Harsh Bhola said it was a big health booster for policemen to alleviate their stress and burden. “Having a gym at a doorstep exclusively for the cops will encourage them to use it to burn extra fat and be ready for the next round of duty with extra energy,” he added.

Sources said hundreds of policemen were suffering from hypertension, diabetes besides various other ailments. Yoga and meditation was also being started along with gym.

The SSP said a trainer would be appointed soon for the new gym, adding that he hoped that the initiative would prove a milestone in keeping policemen agile and fit.
