Faridkot, November 1

Five accused, including Inspector General of Police (IGP) Paramraj Singh Umranangal, former Moga SSP Charanjit Sharma and former Akali MLA Mantar Singh Brar, on Friday appeared before the District and Sessions Court here in the Kotkapura police firing case of October 2015.

The court was to hear arguments on the plea of the accused police officers today. Besides the suspended IGP, Charanjit Sharma had demanded the court to retain the record of mobile phone call details of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) members who were probing the attempt to murder case against the IGP and other police officers.

During the argument on the demand, the public prosecutor on the behalf of the SIT alleged that the suspended IGP was using tactics to delay the framing of charges against him and others.

The District and Sessions Court, Faridkot, adjourned the case for November 15.

All accused, including Umranangal, Charanjit Sharma, SP Baljit Singh, ADCP Paramjit Singh and Brar, appeared before the court.

On September 27, Umranangal had filed an application in the Faridkot court for preserving call records of all SIT members. He had urged the court to summon and retain the incoming and outgoing call records of the mobile phones of 11 police officers who are part of the SIT and probing the firing case.

This call record is necessary for effective cross examination of the witnesses and to prove our innocence, he claimed.
