Under fire from the apex court for failing to check stubble-burning incidents, the state government has reportedly directed police officials to act tough against the farmers who were still violating the ban orders issued by the District Magistrate.

Abohar DSP Rahul Bhardwaj, SHOs of all police stations with several cops today fanned out in the subdivision to take action against erring farmers.

Baljit Singh in Dalmirkhera, Gurpreet Singh in Dhani Chiragh, Kashmir Singh and Godha Singh in Balluana village were arrested. All were released on bail later.

The cops also nabbed Jagnandan Singh, Harjinder Singh and Gagandeep Singh of Burjmuhar village near the city bypass here under Section 188 of the IPC for causing pollution. The accused were released on bail.

The district administration continued holding awareness programmes by organising camps at Arniwala village. District Development and Panchayat Officer Harkanwal Singh and Zila Parishad secretary Ranjit Singh motivated farmers to use stubble as manure instead of burning it.
