Amritsar, November 25

A day after Congress block samiti member from Attari Ranjit Singh Rana was arrested by the Amritsar rural police with 1.52 kg of heroin in the Chatiwind police station area, the party has expelled him.

A resident of Daoke village in Attari, Ranjit Singh was also arrested in 2013 for possessing 9-kg heroin with 5-kg narcotic powder, said police officials. He came out of jail on bail in 2016.

Bhagwant Pal Singh Sachar, district Congress committee president (rural), said the matter was taken up with the higher-ups after which he was expelled from the party immediately.

When questioned how a person with such a background managed to get into the party fold, he said it was the responsibility of the constituency in charge to get a person’s antecedents verified before recommending his membership in the party. He said he would ask the higher-ups to look into this issue.

Meanwhile, Amritsar (rural) SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal said preliminary investigations had revealed that Rana had links with a Pakistani heroin smuggler identified as Ali. “We are also identifying his local forward and backward links to bust his nexus,” he said.

Rana along with a couple — Harjit Singh and Mandeep Kaur of Guru Nanak Colony — were nabbed at a naka.
