On the directions of the Supreme Court, the state government on Friday rolled out a scheme for providing financial incentive of Rs 100 per quintal to small and marginal farmers who do not burnt paddy straw, but the farmers who had grown basmati have been left out of this scheme.

This scheme has been limited to those farmers who cultivate non-basmati paddy varieties and own a land holding of less than 5 acres. They must have managed the paddy residue through in situ management without burning the crop residue.

Baljit Singh, a farmer from Dharamkot who had grown basmati on 4 acres, said the average yield of basmati had decreased by 2 to 4 quintals per acre putting an extra financial burden on them. The average yield of basmati is 20 quintals per acre, which has decreased to 18 quintals in most parts of the state.

“The state government must also include basmati growers in this scheme to give them financial assistance for not burning straw,” demanded Sukhdev Singh Kokri, general secretary, BKU (Ekta).

The state has made it mandatory for farmers to give a written undertaking that he/she has cultivated non-basmati varieties of paddy on specified area and has not burnt its residue after harvesting the crop.
