Arya Nagar councillor Thakur Dass Siwan on Monday led a protest against the Municipal Council for allegedly allowing a private contractor to earmark the land opposite Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya, neighbouring railway colony, on Nai Abadi Road here for a regular garbage dump centre.

School head Tinku Rani, teachers, students and their parents participated in the protest. Tinku Rani said she had sent a protest letter to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate on July 15 in which she expressed her resentment on dumping of garbage by ad hoc staff of the private contractor near the school, which was founded and run by the DAV Managing Committee.

The SDM had reportedly forwarded the letter to the council but the latter did not respond. The dump has not only polluted the environment, but has also become a source of concern for hundreds of students who have to cross the road to go to other educational institutions.

Siwan, a Dalit leader, said the dumping site was a big blow to the celebrations in connection with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi as the government had launched a comprehensive drive to promote Swachhata. “We will intensify the protest if no action is taken,” he said.
