Pensioners protest over DA arrears

Fazilka, October 7

Members of the Punjab Government Pensioners' Joint Front organised a state-level dharna in Shaheed Udham Singh Park, Jalalabad, to protest against non-fulfillment of their demands here today. They have been demanding release of dearness allowance (DA) arrears and reimbursement of medical bills.

They accused the state government of adopting a dilly-dallying approach.

General secretary Dev Raj Sharma said the protesters, holding black flags, took out a procession in Jalalabad and raised slogans against the state government.

The pensioners said Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, during a meeting on May 24, had assured them that payment for DA arrears and medical reimbursement would be made soon, but nothing was done.

The other demands of the pensioners include an increase in medical allowance to Rs 2,000 per month and introduction of the cashless treatment scheme for them. They said the state government was not fulfilling their demands claiming financial constraints, but had been appointing advisers by burdening the exchequer.

Thakar Singh, Prem Sagar Sharma, Mahinder Singh, Ranbir Singh Dhillon, Lal Singh, Ajmer Singh and Ajit Singh Sodhi were among the protesters.
