When stubble-burning was a common practice among farmers in 2006, Jaideep Singh from Sadda Singh Wala village shunned the exercise by managing the paddy residue by ploughing it in the soil.

Jaideep, who cultivates paddy on over 40 acres, had stopped the stubble-burning practice to improve the health of the soil, which had high pH value ranging 9.9 and was also deficit in organic matter. The soil pH is a measure of the acidity and alkalinity in the soil. The range between 7.5 and 8.5 is considered optimal for most crops.

Jaideep, who was honoured by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sandeep Hans at a Kisan Training Camp here on Thursday, said he was not getting good output from farming despite using best fertilisers and he was advised by an agriculture expert to experiment by ploughing the paddy stubble in the soil. “I stopped putting matchstick on paddy stubble since 2006. After two years, the results have been outstanding,” he said.

He said the pH value had now come to 8.2 while the organic matter had also increased to .75 from .30, which is considered best for the growth of healthy crops.

Since he shunned stubble-burning, the yield of the wheat also increased to at least 20 quintal per acre from the previous yield of 15-16 quintal.
