Sangrur, October 10

The Sangrur police on Thursday claimed to have busted a gang involved in 1,500 fraudulent ATM withdrawals in 90 cities of nine states during the last five years. Seven of the 13 gang members are in the police net.

In Sangrur district alone, the police claimed to have solved 30 of 47 cases of fraudulent withdrawals. The police have recovered 64 ATM cards of various banks, one skimming devise used to clone ATM cards and Rs 4.54 lakh of the total Rs 55 lakh from the gang members. The gang was active in Punjab, Haryana, HP, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, UP, Rajashthan and Chhattisgarh.

“We have discovered fraudulent withdrawals amounting to Rs 50 lakh so far. We have also traced 60 FIR registered against the gang members,” said Dr Sandeep Garg, SSP, Sangrur.

Explaining their modus operandi, Garg said gang members would target those who could not operate their ATMs. On the pretext of helping the gullible card holders, they would clone their ATM cards with a skimming machine within seconds. One of them would stand near ATM and notice the pin. Besides, they swapped self-made fake cards with original ones on the pretext of helping the card holders.

Following a tipoff, a CIA team on Tuesday evening conducted a raid near a brick kiln between Kakra and Sakraudi villages. The team arrested seven persons — Raj, Bablu, Parveen, Rajesh, Dinesh, Bittu and Randhir — from the spot. Other gang members — Bittu, Balinder Singh, Rajesh, Sanjay, Rinku and Randhir — are absconding.

“Four of the arrested gang members are proclaimed offenders. We are looking at the records of others. We have procured their two-day police remand and conducting further investigation,” said the SSP.

The cyber cell of Sangrur police played a major role in cracking the case. It conducted thorough investigations of CCTV footages seized from various places and dumps of towers of various mobile of various locations. On September 24, with the arrest of two members of a gang, the Sangrur police claimed to have solved 460 fraudulent ATM withdrawal cases in Bihar and Punjab.

Modus operandi

  • On the pretext of helping gullible card holders, gang members would clone their ATM cards with a small skimming machine within seconds.
  • A member of the gang would stand near the ATM and notice the pin code when a card holder carried out transactions.
  • Gang members would also swap a fake card with the original one on the pretext of helping the card holder.
