Tanda youth among 4 Punjabis killed in Italy

Tanda Urmar, September 13

Four men hailing from Punjab were killed when they fell into a manure tank at a dairy farm near Pavia city, about 50 km from Milan, in Italy.

Two of the deceased have been identified as brothers Prem Singh (48) and Tarsem Singh (45), who were the owners of the farm. The other two — Harminder Singh (29) and Manjinder Singh (28) — worked at the farm.

After getting the information, rescue teams reached there and extracted the bodies from the tank with the help of the fire brigade.

Harminder Singh, son of Bakhshish Singh, was a resident of Kurala village, located near Tanda in Hoshiarpur district. He had moved to Italy two years ago there. Harminder’s cousin Paramjit Singh, who’s also living in Italy, informed the family in Punjab about his death on the phone. As news of Harminder’s death spread, a pall of gloom spread in the area. Harminder’s father died some time ago.

Balwinder Kaur, mother of Harminder, said he was to come to India in December this year to attend the wedding of his sister. Harminder was the only bread-winner for the entire family. According to information from Italy, one of them fell into the manure tank while cleaning it and the remaining three jumped to save him. All died after inhaling the toxic gas in the tank.

When the farm owners did not return home, their wives went to the farm and saw a body in the tank. They then informed the police and the fire brigade retrieved the bodies from the tank. — OC

Wives raised alarm

The wives of the victims raised an alarm when the men failed to turn up for lunch on Thursday. They rushed to the scene and spotted one body in the sewage tank.
