Jalandhar, September 7

Skirmishes were reported from several parts of Punjab today following a call for statewide bandh by the Valmiki community demanding withdrawal of TV serial “Ram Siya Ke Luv-Kush”.

A Dalit youth, Gurpreet Gopi, who was trying to shut down a generator shop in Nakodar, was allegedly shot at by the owner, Nirvail Singh. Gopi was hit by a bullet in the abdomen and was taken to a private hospital in Jalandhar where he was operated upon. Nirvail and his brother Kulwinder Singh have been arrested by the police and booked under Section 307 of the IPC and the SC/ST Act and the Arms Act.

Soon after the incident, protesters attacked the shop with stones and rods. “The victim is from a poor family and owns a small shop,” said SSP (Rural) Navjot S Mahal.

The situation outside the hospital remained tense as representatives of the SC community gathered in large numbers to express solidarity with the victim.  Deputy Commissioner Varinder K Sharma and Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Bhullar reached the hospital even as a team of surgeons was called in to operate upon the victim.

In another incident at Sudama Market, protesters armed with swords destroyed vegetables and crates lying covered. They reportedly took away mobile phones and Rs 40,000 in cash belonging to the traders and terrorised them.

The community is opposed to the portrayal of Bhagwan Valmiki in the serial.
