With the crackdown against drug peddlers and liquor smugglers continuing, those involved in such activities have adopted a different strategy to secure their stock from the cops. They are now concealing their consignments in graveyards and even in piles of faecal waste.

On Monday, the police, acting on a tip-off, dug up a pit at the local graveyard and found 54 bottles of country liquor smuggled from Haryana. The bottles were kept in a bag and buried in a pit.

ASI Gurtej Singh, investigating officer, said, “We had some information that residents of Adarsh Nagar here were selling Haryana-made liquor. Then a pit was dug up in the nearby graveyard and 54 bottles of liquor were found from there. A case under the Excise Act has been registered and efforts are afoot to identify the accused.”

Similarly, 6,500 sedative pills were found from a heap of human and cow faeces at Jhorar village near Malout town on Monday.

Deputy Singh, a village resident, in his complaint to the police said when he was removing a pile of faecal waste from outside his house with a tractor, he found a black bag. He then informed the village sarpanch, who called the police. In the bag, there were a large number of sedative pills. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act at Malout police station.

ASI Gurlal Singh, investigating officer, said, “It seems to be a new way to hide the drugs. We have registered a case against unidentified persons and started efforts to trace the accused.”

Parveen Bansal, coordinator, anti-drug committee, Muktsar district, said, “After such incidents, our fight has become four-cornered as we have to deal with some black sheep in the system, drug peddlers, drug addicts and politicians shielding these people.”
