Mining mafia still active in Ropar: Cong

Ropar, September 15

While the district administration and police have failed to rein in the illegal mining and goonda tax mafia, local Congress leadership has confirmed that the minerals were being plundered with impunity in the district.

Ropar district Congress president Brinder Singh Dhillon said all those involved in illegal mining, including government officials, would be exposed soon. Announcing setting up of a five-member committee comprising four lawyers, he said the panel would talk to all sections of society to expose people behind the mafia.

The committee would also look into the problems of locals who have been affected by illegal mining in the district, he said.

Dhillon claimed the officials concerned, particularly from the Mining Department, were misguiding the state government regarding the situation in the district due to which appropriate action could not be taken against the offenders. The committee is headed by Congress leader and prominent lawyer Paramjeet Singh Pamma and its members are Sanjiv Verma, Arshnoor Singh, Rajiv Sharma and Darshan Singh Dhahan.
