Couple killed in mishap

Abohar: A bike-borne couple, Raj Kumar (35) and his wife Rani (32), was killed as their vehicle was allegedly hit by a car coming from the opposite direction on Khuyiansarwer-Panjkosi Road, about 17 km from here on Sunday. Car driver Varinder of Jandwala Meerasangla village sustained minor injuries. The car was reportedly speeding after colliding with another biker, Raisahib of Taja Patti village, on its way to the highway. The couple is survived by two children. A case of negligent driving was registered. OC

4 die in road accidents

Chamkaur Sahib: Four people, including a couple and a four-year-old girl, were killed in two separate road accidents here on Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Swaran Singh (45), Rajwinder Kaur (40), Raman (4), all residents of Bama Kulia village, and Gorkha (16) of Fasse village. In the first incident, a car coming from the Neelon side hit a motorcycle and a cart being pulled by pony near Bassi Gujran village. In another incident, Gorkha was killed when an unidentified car hit his motorcycle near Khokhran village. TNS

Polio drive for migrants

Chandigarh: Health and Family Welfare Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu on Sunday launched a three-day Sub-National Immunisation Day drive, especially for migrants by administering drops of oral polio vaccine to children below five years at a state-level function in Balongi, Mohali. Balbir said as many as 8,000 teams would conduct door-to-door visits, while 800 supervisors would hold sudden checks to monitor the drive and ensure that all children were immunised. TNS

One held for illegal mining

Fazilka: The police claimed to have arrested one person and impounded a sand-laden tractor-trailer in Amir Khas village. Investigating Officer Jarnail Singh said on a tip-off, a police party raided a place near Amir Khas village and nabbed Mukhtiar Singh of Guruharsahai subdivision of Ferozepur district. He was booked under Section 379 of the IPC and Mines and Mineral (Regulation and Development) Act. OC
