Another victim dies, toll 24

Another victim dies, toll 24

Amritsar/Batala, Sept 9

Another victim with burn injuries suffered in the Batala firecracker blast succumbed to his injuries at Government Medical College here, with the death toll reaching 24.

The patient identified as Vicky had sustained over 70 per cent burns in the blast. A resident of Batala town in Gurdaspur, Vicky was shifted to the GMC due to the serious nature of his injuries.

The GMC officials said another patient with burn injuries in the ICU was also critical. The hospital had also received two patients with head injuries, who had been operated upon successfully at a private hospital as the GMC does not have a neurosurgeon.

Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Ashok Sidhu said, “Both the patients who were operated for head injuries are recovering after the surgery.” The hospital had admitted five patients, of which Vicky died on Monday. Around 11 injured in the blast are also being treated at the Batala Civil Hospital.

Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Partap Singh Bajwa blamed the Gurdaspur district administration for the tragedy and said a probe should be conducted as to why the complaints of the residents against the illegal unit were not acted upon timely by the officials concerned.

Bajwa, accompanied by Sri Hargobinpur MLA Balwinder Singh Laddi, took a round of the blast site and remained there for nearly two hours.

“Had they taken timely action, this tragedy would’ve been averted. It is as clear as daylight that officials, both from the police and the civil administration, showed laxity of the highest order.” — TNS
