Faridkot, September 7

On the last day of counselling for MBBS and BDS courses held at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) here today, 507 of the 1110 BDS seats in 12 colleges remained vacant.

Only government dental colleges at Amritsar and Patiala and Christian Dental College, Ludhiana, were able to fill all their 40 seats each.

Fearing a large number of the seats remaining vacant, many private colleges offered up to 62 per cent tuition fee waiver, while others offered incentives like supplementary courses to woo students.

Having 100 BDS seats, Desh Bhagat Dental College, Mandi Gobindgarh, could fill only 10. The college has offered up to 62 per cent fee concession to the students whose NEET score is 300 for general category and 200 reserve category and 50 per cent waiver to all students.

Most of the private colleges charge Rs 10.21 lakh and Rs 7.65 lakh as full course tuition fee for government quota and management quota seats, respectively.

However, facing shortage of aspirants, many colleges offered to admit students on fee charged by government colleges i.e. Rs 3.80 lakh for full course. In Adesh Dental College, Bathinda, 52 of the 100 BDS seats remained vacant. Genesis Dental College in Ferozepur has 67 of 100 seats vacant, while the NDC, Derabassi, has 59 vacant seats.
