The Education Department seems to have found itself in a tight spot as 450 seats are still vacant in 10 meritorious schools in the state even after four rounds of counselling.

Following the embarrassing situation, the Education Department officials have already diluted the eligibility criterion for the fifth counselling, which will be held on Monday. The department said the fifth counselling would be for the students who have secured 45 to 49.99 per cent in the entrance test.

Notably, the department has already conducted four entrance tests to fill the vacant seats this year. In fact, the poor response from the students has raised questions on the quality of education in these schools. Sadly, of the 10 schools, not even a single school could fill their assigned seats. The officials said the majority of the seats were vacant in Ferozepur, Gurdaspur and Sangrur.

The meritorious schools were opened in 2016 to impart quality education, exclusively, to the students (scoring above 80 per cent in the PSEB Class X board exams) from a rural and poor background. But, the programme seems to have lost its sheen over the years.

Meanwhile, Meritorious Schools Director Maninder Sarkaria said the majority of seats were vacant in the boys’ category. “Only the entrance test percentage has been lowered to fill the vacant seats, not the board marks. There can be various reasons for the seats being vacant, but I am hopeful that these will be filled in this counselling,” Sarkaria said.
