Muktsar, August 8

The construction of Muktsar town’s maiden railway overbridge (RoB) on the Jalalabad road here may cost more to the state government. As per the layout of the RoB, now sewerage lines have to be shifted for this RoB and the work will cost the Water Supply and Sanitation Department nearly Rs 1 crore.

The department has even prepared an estimate to shift the sewerage so that the construction work does not get hampered. However, it has worried the local residents, spearheading the movement of the construction of the RoB.

“The town’s sewerage is already not working properly, thus even minor changes in it may collapse the entire system. Further, extra funds of Rs 1 crore will prove a major issue now,” said Sham Lal Goyal, who is spearheading the movement of the construction of the RoB.

He added, “It seems the earlier design of the RoB was faulty as engineers had first decided to acquire the Railway’s land to avoid any kind of change in the existing sewerage system. It is surprising that now they have to shift the sewerage system. It needs an inquiry and action against negligent officials.” He said he would take up this issue with Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal in a meeting to be held on issues related to the Railways on August 8.

PS Dhanju, Executive Engineer, Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Muktsar, said, “We had got a layout of the RoB and as per that the sewerage had to be shifted. An estimate of Rs 99 lakh has been prepared, but the technical team will vet and finalise it.” Davinder Kumar, Executive Engineer, PWD (B&R), Muktsar, said, “We are working positively and the Sanitation Department has brought it to our notice that their sewer lines will get punctured thus the demand of more funds will be sent to the government and hopefully it will be sanctioned in a short time.”
